Well. My daughter suggested I start a blog and share my thoughts on various topics. My first topic is diversity. She specifically meant my unique-in-her-mind view of history and how it is endlessly repeating itself, but I am going to start with diversity.
Diversity is defined as "the condition of having or being composed of differing elements: variety."
Look around your home city. Diversity is what defines America. But, we sometimes get confused and believe that diversity is comprised of only certain immutable characteristics. Diversity is so much more than that. Everyone comes to the table with something to offer, and it is not only sex, gender, race, nationality or ancestry. Diversity includes ideas, politics, background, and experiences.
You may or may not share my life experiences. I am a father, a son, a brother, a former member of the United States military, a high school graduate, a college graduate, and a lawyer.
Your experiences offer perspective that some of us may share, and some of us may appreciate some experiences more than others, but in my view, even though perspective and experiences are as diverse as each of us, when looked at objectively we might find that even though we are diverse, we are not really very different from each other.
The world is changing before us, but it has changed in similar ways in our historical past. Many past generations have been faced with defining or redefining itself. Let's not continue to define ourselves based on only a few diverse elements, and let's start recognizing that as diverse as we are, when brought to the least common denominator, we are people who want to be comfortable, recognized as the individual and part of the collective, appreciated, and respected.
